Schools: maintenance

Mr BATTIN — On Friday the Minister for Education visited Cockatoo, Emerald, Yarra Junction, Warburton and Wesburn primary schools. The principals of these schools raised a number of concerns with the minister, one of which was the lack of maintenance funding. We all know that the former government left our schools to rot, cutting maintenance funding by 20 per cent over 10 years. Many of the principals and school council presidents were pleased to hear that this government is undertaking a full maintenance audit of the condition of buildings in every government school in Victoria. They were even more pleased to hear that the government is increasing maintenance spending from $59 million under Labor to $87.5 million a year over the next four years. Under the former government some of these schools could only afford to mow their grounds once or twice a year. These are schools in areas at high risk of bushfires.
It is good to see that the minister is taking our children’s safety seriously and investing in our schools.
