NEW LAWS TO COMBAT UNDERAGE DRINKING

The Victorian Coalition Government has passed new laws this week to strengthen the power of Victoria Police in dealing with underage drinking.

Member for Gembrook Brad Battin said the new laws where the latest in a suite of initiatives the Coalition has introduced to tackle underage drinking.

“The laws passed last week will allow Victoria Police, Protective Services Officers, and gambling and liquor inspectors to tip out alcohol seized by a minor,” Mr Battin said.

“Under the previous Labor Government, authorities had to hold on to the alcohol for the duration of their shift.

“As a former member of Victoria Police, I understand how inconvenient and frustrating this was for police.

“These laws are in addition to the changes passed in 2011, which made it illegal for adults to provide liquor to minors in a private residence unless they have the express consent of the minor’s parent or guardian.

“Those found breaking this law could face fines of up to $7000.”

Mr Battin said underage drinking was one of the biggest social issues facing young people and carried a number of risks, both short and long term.

“These new laws deliver on our commitment to strengthen the power of authorities when dealing with underage drinking and further demonstrate that this behaviour will not be tolerated,” Mr Battin said.
