Liberal Nationals to get McGregor Road moving again

An elected Liberal Nationals Government will upgrade McGregor Road to end a notorious traffic bottleneck and create two smoother connections with the Pakenham Bypass.

This investment of $19.2 million will complete the duplication of McGregor Road across the Pakenham railway line as well as building new entry and exit lanes from the Pakenham Bypass at the eastern side of McGregor Road.

The two-lane section of McGregor Road is one of the most notorious bottlenecks in Pakenham. Traffic is forced to merge into a single lane each way over the railway crossing, and recent duplications of nearby sections have induced more traffic to use McGregor Road.

The upgrade will also allow east-bound traffic from McGregor Road to enter the Pakenham Bypass and traffic travelling west along the Pakenham Bypass to directly enter McGregor Road.

Recent residential development to the west of Pakenham and in the Officer area has seen a huge population increase, this has led to a sharp increase in traffic volumes on McGregor Road.

For too long Labor has neglected the plight of motorists in Pakenham who have been condemned to traffic gridlock, impeding their ability to get around.

This announcement is on top of the $5.3 billion commitment by the Liberal Nationals to remove 55 dangerous and congested intersections.

Removing these suburban congestion hotspots will make our roads safer and keep traffic flowing which means less time spent sitting in gridlock and more time at home with family and friends.

It also means people like tradies, couriers and salespeople who use the roads to get between jobs, will be able to do so more quickly. That’s good for business and good for jobs.

Comments attributable to Leader of the Opposition, Matthew Guy:

“I will get Victoria moving again.

“Unlike Daniel Andrews, I understand the need to invest in our suburban roads and remove the traffic bottlenecks that choke our suburbs.

“Brian Paynter and I know it makes no sense for McGregor Road to be restricted to one lane and that is why a government I lead will duplicate it.

“Only the Liberal Nationals have a plan to get ease the squeeze on our suburban roads while Labor wants you stuck in traffic.”

Comments attributable to Member for Bass, Brian Paynter:

“This is what Bass needs, strong leadership from Matthew Guy to ease traffic congestions so we can get to work, get to school and more importantly spend more time with our loved ones.

“I am pleased Matthew Guy and the Liberal Nationals team have listen to my advocacy of this issue and come to Pakenham to make this congestion busting announcement.

“This is the number one issue local residents who live around McGregor Road have raised with me and that is why a Liberal Nationals Government will make it a priority.”
