Making a Smarter Choice on appliances could help Gembrook locals keep their cooling costs down as the mercury rises this summer.
Member for Gembrook Brad Battin MP urged anyone in the market for a new home cooling system or other appliance to take advantage of the Victorian Coalition Government’s Smarter Choice Retail Program to help save money on energy bills.
Mr Battin said The Smarter Choice Retail Program trains retail sales staff to provide customers advice on the energy efficiency of appliances and how to get the best out of the model they choose.
“By choosing the most energy efficient appliances available and using them properly, Victorians can minimise their energy consumption and save money on household bills,” Mr Battin said.
“Families can save up to 25 per cent on their running costs by choosing a more energy efficient air conditioner using the star ratings on the Energy Rating Labels.
“Every extra star on an energy label can save customers around 10 per cent on running costs. A further 10 to 20 per cent can be saved on cooling costs by not setting the thermostat too low.
“Paying a bit more to buy a more energy efficient product can save hundreds of dollars in the long run.”
The Smarter Choice Retail Program provides practical advice throughout 400 retail stores in metropolitan and regional Victoria and includes six of Australia’s top 12 retailers.
As part of the program, customers can also access in-store brochures outlining running costs of appliances, energy and water efficiency tips and easy to use calculators showing the greenhouse gas and water savings made by choosing higher efficiency products.
