Statement on the Births, Deaths and Marriages Registration Amendment Bill 2019
The Liberal Nationals will oppose the Births, Deaths and Marriages Registration Amendment Bill 2019, scheduled to be debated when Parliament resumes next week.
Our position has been determined following wide ranging consultation with a broad cross section of stakeholders and members of the Victorian community, something the Andrews Government has failed to do.
The Liberal Nationals respect the different and divergent views on the issues contained within the legislation.
Comments attributable to Shadow Attorney-General, Edward O’Donohue:
“Birth certificates exist to record the sex of a person at birth.”
“We acknowledge and support the rights of individuals to live their lives according to their identified gender.
However, birth certificates are intended to record biological sex rather than gender identity.”
“The opposition to this Bill from a wide range of women’s organisations about the rights and safety of women has been significant and persuasive.”
“The provisions in the Bill relating to the ability of serious sex offenders, prisoners and parolees are vague and leave questions about community safety unanswered.”
