Labor’s ‘birdbrained’ $351 million cost blowout

Labor’s 21/22 State Budget handed down today reveals their $351 million cost blowout for Stage 2 of the Monash Freeway. It is a budget full of cost blowouts, increased taxes and no plan for the future.

This comes after the previous Labor Minister for Roads Luke Donnellan slammed the Liberals calls for the project in 2016 as ‘birdbrained’.

State Liberal Member for Gembrook Brad Battin is furious of the Labor Government’s blows out and explains “If the Andrews Labor Government didn’t dismiss and delay the project for so long the Victorian people would not have to pay an extra $351 million due to market escalations”.

With $301.8 million of the Government total estimated investment still to be budgeted by the Andrews Labor Government to complete the project, it needs to be asked what essential upgrades will go unfunded to pay for Labor’s cost blowout.

Mr Battin states “$351 million could fund a number of important road projects missing from the government’s 21/22 state budget and the Government must come out and state if this cost blow out is the reason for the delays in Koo Wee Rup Road upgrades.”

Today’s revelation only shows that the only ‘birdbrained idea’ was their $351 million cost blowout for the Monash Freeway upgrade.
